I Won Those Kids' Hearts
SETTING:Takes place during the Remedial Course Arc.

Vearn groaned as he walked up to the recreation center, rubbing his temples. Part of him was happy to have the opportunity and further his path, but damn he really hated early morning classes. As soon as he got in the building, he heard that boisterous oaf from the exam shout: "Hey- it's UA!"Oh god not him again. Vearn took a tentative breath and slowed his walking to observe. Inasa Yoarishi was waving at two other students at the crossroads of the hall. One was the spiky haired bomb boy, Bakugo Katsuki, and the other- seriously? He's in this too?He stopped at the precipice of the wall's shadow to watch."Ooh! Who's this smoldery looking two-toned boy?" another voice said. A girl wearing the same uniform as Yoarishi stepped towards the three guys. "You're, like, super hot. I'm crazy psyched to train with a total babe like you."Yoarishi revealed again that he wasn't bald to bomb-boy while another Shiketsu student reprimanded the girl, Camie Utsushimi, for speaking so callously. He was very animated, passionate even, about upholding his school's reputation."Hold on!" Katsuki shouted at the purple haired guy. "You failed the first test we took, loser-""I received permission to observe, so I'm here to judge you!" the Shiketsu student said."You stupid me-" "My name's Seiji Shishikura!"Their bickering rose to include Yoarashi, and then Camie put her own two cents in, while Shoto Todoroki just stood there. Vearn sighed, crossing his arms as he analyzed each of their approaches and conversation tactics. The only one that somewhat amused him was Camie - he didn't see her in the exam at all, and her flighty personality reminded her of Dekel.I need to thank him, Vearn thought as the five students continued talking. But he's never around anymore. Still, how did he-"Ooh? Who's that shiny sparkly guy there?"Vearn stiffened. His fairy wings shivered as all eyes settled on him. Great, he slowly stepped forward."Huh, I don't remember seeing you at the e-""Hey- you're that Ketsubutsu kid that got in my face!" Yoarishi exclaimed, cutting Todoroki off.His shouting went right over Vearn's head, but his loudness was overbearing. "You're the one that whipped up a windstorm on everybody," Vearn commented, keeping his voice steady."I did huh-" Yoarishi said bluntly. It took him a moment to think, then he said, "Wait hold on, I got everybody with that blast-""You got two of my targets," Vearn clicked his tongue, annoyed at this guy's power. His wings stiffened. "And you bent one of my wings."Camie oohed at their sparkliness and leaned towards Vearn. He stepped back and folded them together, hoping she would leave him alone. Please stop, he tried to convey with his eyes."How was I supposed to know?" Yoarishi asked. "You're the one that slammed into my face! I couldn't see anything after that!""You're the one that whipped up that mess," Vearn stepped back again, away from Camie. "You might have gotten the most of those students, but your control is lackluster."That seemed to tick the Shiketsu student off, making him shut up instantly. Then Katsuki spoke with an impressed grin, "I like you sparkly freak."Vearn shot him a warning look, surrendering to Camie's watchful gaze, "Watch it bomb boy."Todoroki's nonchalant eyes slightly widened at the burn, while Katsuki stiffened before barking back, "You watch it! And what are you doing here anyways? You didn't train with us before!""Neither did Camie and she's here-" "Shut up baldy!" "I told you I'm not bald!"Vearn let out a shaky sigh. It was true he hadn't, but today was his only chance to prove how much he was a part of this program. If it weren't for his brother, then he would have to take the test again. Plus, his brother wouldn't let that happen anyways, even if he was okay with retaking it.Todoroki looked him up and down, "You're from Ketsubutsu, right?"Vearn crossed his arms over his uniform, "And you're from U.A."They both exchanged long gazes before Todoroki asked, "You're in the same class as Yo Shindo, right? Didn't they all pass?"Vearn's wings trembled as he darted his eyes at Endeavor's son, "What's it to you?""Just curious, that's all," Todoroki commented. The statement hit a nerve in Vearn, "If you're so curious, then you should speak your mind more."Todoroki considered his words, then asked, "How did you fail?"That caught Vearn off guard, stunning him as Yoarashi spoke up, "Yeah, we didn't see you in the second round at all! And all those Ketsubutsu students passed super easy! What happened?"Vearn gritted his teeth, "For your information, your little stunt wrecked my wings so much I couldn't do shit for the rest of the first round.""So you failed? That's gotta be, like, the worst way to go," Camie said. "So you're just here like Seiji, right? To judge us?"His wings shook. Shit, here we go then. "Unfortunately, I have to work with you today. Not like it matters since gusto here will muck it all up," Vearn jutted a hand at Yoarashi."Hey! I told you-""So you got special permission to bypass the rule, huh?" Seiji cut off his classmate. He looked Vearn up and down, unamused by the fairy kid's bravado. "You got grandfathered in, didn't you?"All of the guys paused then glared at Vearn; Camie gazed at them all before joining in. Vearn's wings sagged a little. Dammit, he stared at the space between them all. "Fine, so I did. You act like I wanted it this way, but I didn't. I didn't ask to get a pass, but I'm here already, so deal with it," Vearn stated. Then he turned on his heel and walked down the hallway to the locker room to change into his hero costume. The only thing he heard after was Camie's offhand comment on how weirdly attractive he was.
.../..../..../.*
"-kind of food do you like?" Yoarashi's voice said down the hall.Vearn was adjusting his collar when he paused upon hearing the guy. Again, he kept to a corner and listened in on the conversation."Soba. Cold." Todoroki answered flatly."Man, I like my noodles pippin' hot!" the wind man said. "Also, I prefer udon.""We're very different," Todoroki answered, his voice fading as they walked."No way!" Yoarashi exclaimed. "I feel like we've gotten closer!""That guy's ridiculous."Vearn stiffened upon hearing his voice match up with somebody else's. He turned to see Katsuki glowering at the two students walking down the hall. His costume was anything but obvious to his abilities. The gauntlets, the colors - it made Vearn cringe at its sight. Before he could walk away though, the bomb boy spoke up, "Hold on."Vearn reluctantly stopped, bracing himself for another half-witted remark."Whatever- whoever you are, you're not going to upstage me ya glittery bug," the U.A. student threatened, shoving a shoulder into Vearn and walking past. "So stay out of my way, extra."Extra, huh? Vearn sniffed, a bit impressed at that line. He let some distance get between them before following into the sports center auditorium. Guess he needs to fulfill that ego through degradation? He caught the door before it closed and stepped into the room. It was big, essentially the size of his school's gym, with tall walls for the main floor and empty stands. Well, mostly empty, as somebody obscenely green and purple sat in one of them, gazing around mindlessly.Oh please god no.He stood next to Camie as previously instructed and tried to keep his head down."So," that guy from the exam said in the middle of the room. "We rented out this sports center in order to put you through some specialized training." He yawned, his head bobbing. "Sorry 'bout that, I've actually been afraid of falling asleep recently. I'm Mera. Today will be fun." His short laugh sent a chill through all the other students around him."That doesn't sound good," they all muttered, sweating a bit."Oh, one more thing before we begin," Mera raised his hands. "Up until now, we've had ten people in this remedial training class. But starting today, we'll have twelve."That's our cue-"SHOTO!"Everybody spun towards the top of the bleachers. Their eyes widened and mouths dropped to see Endeavor, along with two other people near him. "You never should've failed the initial exam in the first place!" he shouted to the entire auditorium. "Show these weaklings you're in a completely different league!"Todoroki turned from his line of sight as the rest of the students ogled at Endeavor and subsequently All Might, sized-down version, next to the new number one hero. The students' excitement reverberated throughout the entire area. The green and purple guy in the stands glanced at current and former top heroes. Vearn wanted to shrink down and fly away."Yeah, if everyone could just calm down," Mera said. "I wasn't finished."Everybody stopped. Camie readied herself and stepped forward. Vearn took a moment for her to be introduced."This girl will be joining us from now on," Mera presented her as she took off her hat and posed."Hey, second year at Shiketsu," she partly smiled. "The name is Camie. Hi, everyone!""Right, so like the rest of you, she made it to the second exam. And she did well enough to take this supplemental class. But the foggy memories leading up to the first test made it difficult to place her. That's why she hasn't participated until now," Mera explained."They said 'totes' to making an exception for me which is wicked coolio, you know?" Camie flared two fingers into a peace sign. "So anywhos, let's keep it fresh!""I have no idea what she just said," the students muttered."And this boy will be joining as well," Mera flared a hand towards Vearn. He took a breath before stepping forward and holding his head up high. "Third year at Ketsubutsu. I'm Vearn Levian."A lot of heads tilted in confusion. The group from before waited patiently for the explanation."He barely failed exam," Vearn twinged at Mera's concise explanation. "The other student beat him by a second, ultimately making him not pass. But after careful consideration by the Commission, we decided that his resolve during the exam with an injury qualified him for a spot in this course. He had been taking separate supplemental classes to accommodate the injury, hence why he's here now."Vearn's fingers clenched, not wanting to add anything else. He didn't even intend to keep going since Yoarashi hurt him, but it was his last chance to get the provisional license so he continued on foot, unable to use his Quirk effectively the entire time. Just as he touched his final target, the device didn't light up, and that was when he realized he failed. He didn't even look at the score sheet. He just went straight home afterwards."Whoa- seriously?" "That's some dedication for sure!" "Wait- how was he injured?""His wings were bent due to Yoarashi's winning blow to a number of examinees," Mera explained as Vearn shot daggers at the wind kid. All eyes turned towards Yoarashi. "Despite that, he continued the test without the use of his Quirk.""Wow!" "That's crazy!" "How is that possible?" "No wonder he barely passed!""That can't be the full reason," Katsuki stated under his breath, but it was loud enough for everybody to hear. He flashed his teeth at Mera. "The commission was clearly bribed to let him go on!"Mera considered his statement and ignored the lingering gossip, "Not that it's any of your concern, but we deliberate very closely on each student and their achievements. This being Levian's last year before graduating is a big factor-""And having a hero of a brother is another!" a sultry voice sang.Everybody stopped and looked around before settling on the one person in the bleachers standing and waving. It was easy to distinguish he was Vearn's brother just by the wings, but by personality they were complete opposites. Dekel waved crazily with a big smile and gentle voice, "You're doing great little bro! You deserve that spot!""Seriously?" "Whoa- is that Oberon?" "Ah- he's so dreamy!" "He's that fairy hero from Esuha!" "Oh my gosh- he has a brother?" "No wonder he's here!" "This is so cool!"As much as Vearn wanted to ditch the whole thing right then and there, he stood his ground, mustered up his feelings, and let them explode back at his brother: "Shut up man! You don't even need to be here!""Oh come now," Dekel called back, wiggling a brow and flaring a hand forward dramatically. Several girls squealed, including Camie. "A devoted brother is the best kind to have! Not to mention-""Cut it out before I come up there myself!""Right, then," Mera cut in, silencing everybody as Vearn glared, steaming up at his brother slowly sitting down in his seat. Mera ushered the glowering Vearn to join the group of students. Vearn stalked over to the other side of Katsuki, desperately trying to keep his wings from flaring out in anger.Mera sat down at a table with two other HPSC staff and opened a laptop. "Let's bring in your instructor." The door opened, and a tall, very tall hero stepped through. Vearn's fiery gaze settled upon seeing the clad-dressed man. "Gang Orca.""So, I've got more disappointments today," the 10th-ranked hero said to the group. "What shame you must feel to be standing before me, given how easy the exam was."Every student clapped their feet together and halted their arms at their sides. Vearn didn't. Instead, he just looked at them. What, we're not in the military!Gang Orca stamped over to encase everybody in his menacing aura. "There's something I've realized observing your training thus far," his pupils dilated. "There's nothing heroic about any of you! You're bottom feeders! Nothing but rotten fish turds!""Sir, yes, sir!" everybody cried except for Vearn."I can't hear you!" he bellowed."Sir, yes, sir!" their cries hitched higher. This is ridiculous, Vearn eyed the students. His attention went back to his brother for a moment, and he quickly realized how much he had to show this time around. Yeah, he was getting separate classes, but he couldn't express disdain in front of everybody here, including the Number #1 hero in the room. Plus, Dekel would see his every move too. Dammit, he frowned absentmindedly."Especially you!" the No. 10 hero shouted inches from Katsuki's face. "Do you even want to be a hero?""Well, first of all," the spiky haired kid started. "I'm not a fish turd-""Wrong!" Gang Orca shouted, launching him into the air and away from the group.Vearn's eyes dilated. The hell?"How can a pile of excrement help humanity prosper?" Gang Orca shouted inches from Todoroki's face."Technically fertilizer is integral to-" Todoroki said before he was launched just like bomb boy."Wrong!" Gang Orca shouted.Vearn's face fell into confusion. Is he really-?"Do you expect to be praised just because you have powerful attacks?" Gang Orca shouted inches from Yaorashis' face."Sir, yes–""Wrong!" Gang Orca shouted again while launching gust-boy away.Vearn's mouth dropped and cold hit him like a wave. Oh my god I'm going to die here!"I am well aware that all three of you have impressive combat abilities," he said to the three students on the far end of the stadium. "But that's all you have. Your behavior is unacceptable. You're disrespectful to those in need of rescue and ignore your enemies to compete with one another. Today, we will put you through a special trial." He walked towards them, arms behind his back. "It's time you start training a new muscle. The one that beats in your chest! If you hold out a hand as someone in trouble, will they take it? Not as you are now! It's fine to have fangs, but when a life is on the line, you must have trust!" He flared a hand for emphasis.Geez, did they seriously fail the second part of the exam that bad? Vearn thought. The doors to the room opened as he continued, "You need a special connection with the person you're trying to rescue. Remember that as you train today." The three guys pulled themselves to a stand and readied themselves into fighting positions. "Now, meet your opponents! Through this life or death battle, show that you can come to an understanding with them! That's the hurdle you face!"Then the room exploded with a sea of kids. The guys froze in disappointment. Camie blinked and finally noticed what was happening. Vearn just gaped and stared. What?! That's all they get to do? Are you kidding me?!All of the kids ran around shouting, crying, and oohing at the presenting heroes in front of them - well, student heroes actually. They all appeared to be in elementary school, a year Vearn remembered pretty vividly when he was young. The kids' teacher looked ragged, tired, and beaten by the kids' lack of respect."These kids are from Masegaki Elementary School," Gang Orca widened his arms. Then he turned to the teacher. "Don't worry, we're taking responsibility for your students now."Before the teacher could probably thank him, Katsuki exclaimed, "We're what?!" and a kid ran from him crying. The other kids nearby punched him and called him school-yard insults. Inevitable chaos ensued. Katsuki was calling them brats. Todoroki was being boring. And Yoarashi was getting beaten up by a lot of boys.Vearn, on the other hand, was trying so hard to not move.He winced as small hands tapped his wings, causing fairy dust to fall and coat the little ones' arms. Each time they began to float, he twirled a finger to summon the dust back into his control, allowing them a safe landing on their feet. The problem was that they squealed each time it happened. So they did it again. And they floated. Then he twirled his finger. And they floated back down. And the cycle kept going, and going, and going, all up until Gang Orca thrust a finger in his direction."The five of you will accomplish this together. You must win the hearts of these unruly youngsters! And you! Are part of this group too," he commanded."What-!" Vearn squeaked, making the kids around him laugh and make fun of him. "Why me?""Like Camie, we didn't see you in action like we would've hoped, and since you didn't take the second part of the exam, we need to see how you are with others," the hero explained over Katsuki touting his distaste on being a nanny.A kid jumped up and hung from Vearn's shoulder, giggling and laughing. Vearn let him hang there as he contemplated every decision he's made thus far. The other heroes-in-training were having standard practical exercises, which he hoped to be a part of instead, but all he could think about were the eyes from the stands locked onto him. Then he let out a giant sigh. The kid on his shoulder slipped, but he caught him at the last second and set him down. "Fine."He stepped forward towards the mass of kids and the other delinquent teenagers. Pairs of small eyes turned towards him, transfixed by his glittery wings against his dark hero costume. Then he was swarmed in seconds. He just let them do whatever, as was used to the attention from little kids. They acted like crows, or squirrels, or any animal that was transfixed by shiny things. He tried to ignore them pandering around and doing whatever, but as soon as he felt a pull on his wings, he shrunk down to an invisible size and flew out of there. The child-swarm toppled into each other and looked around, dazed and confused at where he went.Once he was at a safe distance, he sized back up and touched his boot back down. He fluttered his wings to double check they weren't injured. The kids' heads swiveled in his direction, and ran towards him with excitement."Wow!" "How'd you do that!" "Did you turn invisible?" "That's so cool!" "Are you a fairy?" "He has to be!" "He has fairy dust!" "Whoa so awesome!" "I want to fly again!" "Ooh me first!" "No! Me first!" "No! Me!""Hey, hey, slow down," he said, a smile creeping to his face. "I'll show you again only-" The kids kept talking over each other. "ONLY if you stay calm. And don't crowd, you'll hurt yourselves.""We won't hurt ourselves!" a kid with silver hair huffed and puffed his chest.A kid with a giant mouth cried out, "We're strong!"A small laugh escaped him, "I know you are. But I still won't do it if you don't behave.""No!" a different kid pulled on his arm. "Do it now!"Vearn's face instantly hardened, like a statue, and the kid's confidence slid off his face. The kid backed into his friends. Vearn looked at them all, still bouncy and eager to run around and do kid stuff. He glanced at the teacher from across the way, admitting to Present Mic - when did he get here? - her woes of being a teacher while the other students struggled with their batch of kids. "Ugh," he erred slightly. All teachers were complaining about this stage in life, so it was nothing new to him. Hell, he's dealt with kids like this before anyways. And the others? He couldn't help but laugh at their inability to handle anybody younger than them. Idiots."Stand in a circle-" he glanced at a kid sitting staring up. "Or sit, whatever you want, just be in a circle so everybody can see."They instantly obeyed, jittery and gripping tiny little fists in anticipation. He heard Katsuki mutter something beyond the wall of kids. He ignored it. "Now watch carefully, don't blink, or-" he activated his Quirk and shrunk down to the size of a quarter. The kids let out startled shrieks and "wow"s as he hovered mid-air, tiny, and shining just like a fairy."That's so cool!" "He really is a fairy!"That was the extent of most of their exclamations. He floated for a bit, seeing the dazzling light in the kids' eyes around him. It made him smile too. That pureness, that innocence was infectious. He gazed up at his brother who shot him a big thumbs up. Then he heard a distant exasperated shout from the bomb boy: "Oh come on! That's not fair- he's using his flashy Quirk on them!"Vearn rolled his eyes. He flitted over to one of the girls who splayed out her hands towards him. He stepped onto them, and crossed his arms, "Now be gentle, I'm not a toy."
"You're so tiny!" she squealed, dancing on her feet. "I wish I was a fairy!"He smirked up at her, "Then your wish is granted." He held up a hand and focused, twirling his fingers as his other hand swathed a dash of fairy dust over the palm he stood on. The girl gaped, then soon enough she had shrunk to the size of a penny. She gasped then squealed like crazy. The other kids crowded around them. He put up an unnecessary arm to shield him and the fairy-sized kid from getting squashed. He put out hand to hold hers, "Hold on- let's get out of here."She gripped his fingers and he shot up and out of the crowd, holding onto the little girl as they sailed over the sea of kids. Then he sized them both back up, controlling his dust and hers simultaneously. They floated down to the ground just beyond their little crowd - and she was smiling all the while. All of the kids cheered and begged to go next. He laughed as they poked and prodded him, not beating him up or being too harsh. They were finally being respectful. Once he stood up he told them to make a line so everybody could have a turn. They did. And soon enough he was giving them each a dose of fairy dust, granting them a minute each time to feel the sensation of flying, shrinking down, and sizing back up again. Only one kid puked, and Vearn made sure to hand him off to the teacher after rubbing his back and assuring he was going to be fine."What the hell-!" Katsuki growled loudly. "How is he able to get those kids on his side?" Vearn had ignored him completely, prioritizing the kids' happiness in the moment and shooting a stern look at the ones that cut the line. "Even their leader's over there!"The one with the perfectly combed blonde hair snickered back at bomb boy, admitting, "Because he's not a loser like you.""I am not a loser!" Katsuki yelled at him before turning towards the rest of the others, discussing and pointing back to Vearn with a disgusted finger."Ooh- WOW it looks like Team Fish Turds' newest member has won their hearts already!" Present Mic pronounced to the giant room."Yeah! Go Vearn!" Dekel distantly shouted with pride.Oh my god, Vearn's face contorted into disgust. Please, stop."You did well," Gang Orca stepped towards him just as he sized up with another kid in hand. The girl struggled to level herself, so he held both of her hands and directed her movements until she touched down. Before Gang Orca could continue, Vearn held up a hand and turned towards the kids."Did everybody get a turn that wanted one?" he asked them all."Yeah!" they collectively cheered. He nodded, "Good, now go torment the others. They need it." He smirked at Yoarashi's and Katsuki's offended faces. "Have fun!""We will!" "Thank you!" "That was fun!" "Aw, I wanna go again!" "Come on, let's go punch that big guy!" "Yeah!" "Ooh, what's this big green thing?" "It's bomb guy's ball!" "Hah! Let's play with it!""Give that back!" Katsuki shouted, running after the kids with his gauntlet in their hands.Vearn laughed , then Gang Orca cleared his voice. He looked up at the hero, "These kids aren't terrible, they just need inspiration.""How so?" Gang Orca quizzed.Vearn crossed his arms over his chest, watching as the other students struggled to handle the kids' rowdiness. "Kids that age have the entire world to explore. There's numerous possibilities and paths they can take, like their teacher said, and unbeknownst to them that stress reflects into the chaos we see here. They may be young, but having something to look towards is key to benefitting them in the long run.""You're very astute," Gang Orca nodded. "I can see why you were selected for this course."A hint of pink brushed Vearn's cheeks. "I don't deserve this position. The commission just pitied me enough to place me here," he glanced at Dekel. "And because of my brother's intense charisma.""That may be so, but you show true skill here," Gang Orca clapped his shoulder. "You'll be a great hero."The praise was very... unnerving coming from a villainous looking man. Vearn straightened his back, unable to hide the embarrassment on his face, and firmed his voice to ask, "So, what, did I pass the test?""With flying colors," the hero's shoulders danced with his laugh. "Now." He inhaled, then exhaled with such gusto Vearn thought he was getting blown away by his Quirk. "Get in formation with the rest of the bottom feeders! You have to be absolutely capable before you can be a hero!"Vearn let out a tiny squeak, "Y-Yes sir!""I can't hear you!" Gang Orca bellowed."Yes sir!" Vearn gulped, straightening and raising his voice. "Sir, yes, sir!""Get movin'!" he pointed, and Vearn sprinted to join the rest of the pack. Once there, the others ignored him for a moment before shooting congratulatory glances every so often. At first Vearn was nervous and terrified to what the monstrous hero scheduled for them, but it turned out to be more of the same diligence Dekel gave him but with more fervor. He could do this. And hell, he just conquered the, apparently, most difficult thing the other top students couldn't do. That pride caused his wings to flutter.
